A full Electrical Installation Condition inspection is generally carried out at least every five years depending on the age and condition of the installation. 
Portable   electrical   equipment   must be   properly   maintained   to   prevent danger at workplace or at home

Electrical     system     and     appliance safety    checks    and    certificates    for landlords and home buyers
Although an Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR) from a qualified electrician is discretionary for home owners and private renters, it is a statutory requirement for  commercial properties, properties where the public have access and HMOs (Houses of Multiple Occupancy).
